What is la Conciergerie?
The word “concierge” is an old French term which has been used in the middle age to describe a “keeper of the keys” or a “comte des cierges” (count of candles), a servant responsible for maintaining the lighting and cleanliness of medieval palaces.
The competence of a concierge went outside the castle in the 1800s, when a number of buildings in Europe, from governments to prisons, had their own concierge. A new type of concierge services appeared then in Paris. The concierge had a small apartment on the ground floor and was able to receive mail and parcels, as well as monitor all comings and goings. This was the start of La Conciergerie.
Today’s concierges are highly skilled and disposed to assist by taking care of essentials and time consuming tasks. They also have an extensive network to try to make anything happen!
